(05-09-09) RINDGE, N.H. - The University of New Haven baseball team fell 11-3 late Saturday night in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament. With the loss the Chargers are eliminated from the NE-10 tournament and conclude their 2009 season.
The Chargers opened scoring in the top of the first inning. Tom Rombilus led off with a single to center field. One batter later, Ryan Brockett laid down a bunt and and reach on a fielder's choice, pitcher to short stop. After an Evan Okon single and a Jimmy Rivas walk, Cory Carr earned a walk and earned the RBI wihen Brockett was walked home. Kyle Donnelly drove in the Chargers' second run with a fielder's choice later in the inning.
The Ravens immediately answered, with a five-run bottom of the first inning. Franklin Pierce improve their lead to 8-2 with a three-run second inning. With the game all-but sealed, the Ravens added a single run in the bottom of the third, bottom of the fourth and the bottom of the sixth innings to take an 11-2 lead.
The Chargers scored one in the top of the seventh, but Franklin Pierce retired New Haven in the final two innings to grab a stop in Sunday's championship round.
Okon led the Chargers with three hits on Saturday night. One of his three hits, a double, gave him New Haven's all-time doubles record. Four other Chargers added hits in the game.
On the mound, Vince Lehman suffered the loss. Alex Smith and Mitch Rossi came into the game in relief and earned no decisions.
The Chargers conclude their season with a 22-21 overall record, and a 16-14 record in the NE-10.
