Baseball Halted by Assumption and Get Rematch with Ravens Tonight

(05-09-09) RINDGE, N.H. - The University of New Haven baseball team fell 4-2 in the second round of the Northeast-10 Conference Championship tournament Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Chargers return to action an play Franklin Pierce today at 7 p.m. for a chance at the Championship game tomorrow.

The Greyhounds took the lead in the bottom of the first inning with a single run to take a 1-0 lead. UNH evened the score in the top of the third inning off a Ryan Brockett RBI up the middle.

The Greyhounds regained the lead, 2-1, in the bottom of the fourth inning with another single run. New Haven once again answered in the top of the fifth inning. Senior Kyle Bombace led off the inning with a solo homer over the left field fence to bring the score even at 2-2.

The deciding inning came in the bottom of the fifth as the Greyhounds scored two runs off two hits and one UNH error.

The Chargers managed three hits and four base runners in the final four innings, but could not add a run to the board.

Brockett led the Chargers with three hits and one RBI in five at-bats. Donnelly registered two hits, while Bombace added one hit and one RBI.

Ian Solomon suffered his third loss of the season pitching for the Chargers. Despite the loss, Solomon pitched well in six complete innings, allowing four runs, three earned, and striking out two.

The game between the Chargers and Ravens was pushed back to a start time of 9 p.m. because of thunder storms in the area.
