(05-09-09) BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven softball team suffered a 3-1 loss to No. 20 Georgian Court University Saturday afternoon at the C.W. Post Softball Complex on Long Island. With the loss the Chargers head to the losers bracket and take on the winner of No. 23 C.W. Post and Southern Connecticut later this afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m.
The Georgian Court Lions scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning to break a 0-0 tie. They scored off a double down the left field line with runners on second and third base.
The Chargers totaled only one hit in the next three innings, while the Lions added one run off an error by the Chargers. The Chargers, down 3-0 going into the seventh inning, narrowly tied the game in the final inning.
Allison Vaughn started off the inning with a single to left field. Samantha Minervini then singled to third base to bring New Haven's tying run to the plate. Pinch hitting for the Chargers was Jordanna Borska who was hit by the very first pitch she faced to load the bases with no outs. The Chargers suffered their first out off a ground out to the pitcher in the next at-bat. New Haven's lead-off batter Nicole Downs then stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and one out. She made contact with a pitch and hit it deep down the left field line, but the ball sailed foul and was caught for the second out. The Chargers' on base advanced on the catch, but one runner was picked off and the Lions grabbed the victory.
The Chargers managed only four hits in the loss, including two from Vaughn. Breanne Gleason suffered the loss, her 15th of the season, in the circle for the Chargers. She threw six strikeouts and allowed two earned runs.
The Chargers will take on the winner of game 4 this afternoon at approximately 4:30 p.m. Game 4 between C.W. Post and Southern Connecticut is currently underway.
