(05-03-09) SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven softball team fell 8-0 to Southern Connecticut State University Sunday morning in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship tournament. The Chargers will now wait to see if they've been selected to the NCAA tournament which will be announced late tonight. The Chargers move to 32-16 on the season with the loss.
The Chargers threatened early, loading the bases in the top of the 1st inning before the Owls got out of the jam. New Haven also tried to get something going in the top of the 2nd when Samantha Minervini singled to start the inning before the Chargers again came up empty.
The Owls took the lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI double and extended the advantage in the 3rd inning when they scored three more times.
Through the next four innings, New Haven was unable to tally a hit against the Owls' pitching. Southern Connecticut State put the game away in the bottom of the 6th inning when they scored four times to take an 8-0 lead.
The Owls took 10 walks combined with nine hits to give them 19 base runners on the day, while the Chargers were only able to collect a pair of hits and two walks.
Junior Nicole Downs was named to the Northeast-10 Conference All-Championship Team.
