(05-02-09) LOWELL, Mass. - Junior Shannon Gagne won three events at the Northeast-10 Outdoor Championships on Saturday afternoon to lead the University of New Haven women's track and field team to a fourth place finish. The women finished with 75 team points, while the men earned 29 points for a seventh place finish.
Gagne qualified first in the 100-meter dash (12.29) and bettered her time in the finals (12.13) to capture her first of three titles. She also won the 200-meter dash (24.96) and set a new school record in the long jump with a leap of 19-2.5 (5.85 meters). That mark is the fourth best in NCAA Division II this season.
The Chargers also got a first-place finish from Danielle Howell who set the school record in winning the 400-meter hurdles (66.42).
Other top finishers on the women's side included the 4x100-meter relay team in third (50.20), Melissa Tempesta third in the 3000-meter steeplechase (11:54.17), Alesha Chu Foo fourth in the high jump (1.50 meters), April Daughtery fifth in the pole vault (2.45 meters) and Angela Colandrea fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (70.93).
On the men's side, the Chargers got a first-place performance by freshman Kevin Downing who captured the 100-meter dash crown in a time of 10.72. Other top finishers for the men included the 4x100-meter relay team third (43.70), Kyle Lambert third in the pole vault (3.30 meters), Tyler Parker fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (56.28) and Robert Creighton sixth in the hammer throw (41.58 meters).
The Chargers men and women's track and field teams return to action on Saturday, May 9 at the New England Championships held in Amherst, Massachusetts at the UMass Track and Field Complex.
