(05-02-09) EASTON, Mass. - The University of New Haven baseball team fell in its final regular season Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) matchup of the season against host Stonehill College, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers drop to 20-19 overall, 16-14 in the NE-10 while Stonehill improves to 22-22 overall, 12-16 in conference play.
The Skyhawks got to Chargers' starter Kyle Bombace early in the contest, scoring two runs in the 2nd inning and one in the 3rd to take a 3-0 lead.
Ian Soloman came in relief for New Haven and worked 3.0 innings while giving up one earned run and striking out four.
With the score 4-0 in favor of Stonehill, the Chargers put up their lone run of the game in the top of the 8th inning. Kyle Pettoruto singled with one out and advanced to second base on a passed ball. He advanced to third on a Chargers groundout before Tom Rombilus singled up the middle to bring Pettoruto home.
Closer Mitch Rossi worked a scoreless bottom of the 8th, but the Chargers were unable to mount a rally in the 9th.
New Haven was held to five hits on the day as a team, led by Rombilus who finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and his 17th stolen base of the season. The Skyhawks finished with 11 hits as a team.
The Chargers return to action on Monday, May 4 when they wrap up their regular season with a non-conference game against Post University beginning at 3:30 p.m.
