(04-29-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team fell 6-3 Wednesday afternoon to Post University at Frank Vieira Field. With the loss the Chargers drop to 19-18 on the season, while the Eagles improve to 22-14.
The Chargers scored two runs in the bottom of the opening inning off four hits. Tom Rombilus led off for the Chargers with a single to left field, while two batters later Evan Okon drove a single through the ride side. Each player stole second and third base respectively, before Jimmy Rivas drove a single to center field, which scored Rombilus. Dan Harper then ripped a single to right center, driving in Okon, to give UNH a 2-0 lead. Both Harper and Rivas were stranded on base that inning.
Neither team scored in the second inning, while the Eagled took the lead off a three-run third inning. Post added a single run in each of the next two innings to take a 5-2 lead.
The Chargers mustered one more run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Leading off the inning, Rombilus hit a triple to right center. He scored on batter later when Kyle Donnelly hit a fly out to left field.
Post added one cushion run in the top of the ninth and the Chargers managed only one hit in the bottom of the inning as they fell by a final of 6-3.
Rombilus led the team with three hits and two runs scored, while three others recorded one RBI. Vince Lehman suffered the loss for the Chargers, his fifth of the season, in three complete innings. Alex Smith pitched four complete innings in relief and threw four strikeouts.
The Chargers return to action on Thursday, April 30 when they travel to take on Merrimack College at 3 p.m.
