Baseball Tripped Up by Bentley, Falls 7-1

(04-24-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team fell 7-1 Friday afternoon to Bentley University at Frank Vieira Field. With the loss the Chargers fall to 17-16 overall and 13-12 in the Northeast-10 Conference, the Falcons improve to 22-19 overall and 13-9 in the NE-10.

The Falcons broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the third inning with six runs off five hits. Falcons' pitcher Rob Finneran shut down the Chargers over the next four innings, while the Falcons added a run in the top of the seventh inning to take a 7-0 lead.

The Chargers' lone run on Friday came in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jordan Kershaw was the first to get on base for the Chargers in the eighth inning as he hit a two-out single up the middle. Ken Bilodeau drove in Kershaw with a double down the left field line.

New Haven stranded two Bentley runners on base in the top of the ninth inning and had a six-run gap to close in the bottom of the ninth. UNH managed a hit and put two runners on base in the inning, but fell short of scoring a run in the inning.

Vince Lehman pitched two and 2/3 innings for the Chargers a suffered the loss. Alex Smith pitched five and 1/3 innings of relief, threw two strikeouts and allowed one earned run.

The New Haven offense was led by Jimmy Rivas and Tom Rombilus who each recorded two hits. Ryan Brockett and Evan Okon each tallied one hit.

The Chargers, currently in seventh place in the NE-10 standings, host Franklin Pierce tomorrow in a doubleheader at Frank Vieira Field. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
