(04-23-09) WALTHAM, Mass. - The University of New Haven baseball team held off a ninth inning run from the Bentley University Falcons and secured a 6-5 victory at DeFelice Field Thursday afternoon. With the win the Chargers improve to 17-15 overall and 13-11 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Falcons fall to 21-19 overall and 12-9 in the NE-10.
The Chargers scored first in the top of the second inning Thursday. Kyle Pettoruto singled to center field and drove in Jimmy Rivas for the Chargers first run.
UNH added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Pettoruto and Rivas drove in runs in the fourth, prior to a Dan Harper single up the middle drove in the Chargers fourth run later in the inning.
Kyle Bombace added a RBI and the Chargers scored their sixth run off a Falcons error in the top of the sixth inning. Once falling down 6-0 the Falcons started a rally in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs.
The Falcons added three more runs and left one runner on base in the bottom of the ninth inning.
On the mound for the Chargers was Chris Smith who pitched six innings and threw 11 strikeouts. He faced 26 batters and allowed only two earned runs.
Pettoruto drove in two runs and scored one run, while Cory Carr went 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Rivas scored two of the New Haven's run and Harper tallied one run and one RBI.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. when they host the Falcons at Frank Vieira Field.
