(04-22-09) RINDGE, N.H. - The University of New Haven baseball team fell 7-1 Wednesday afternoon to Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire. The loss drops the Chargers to 16-15 overall and 12-11 in the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10), while the Ravens improve to 25-14 overall and 16-5 in the NE-10.
The Chargers scored first in the top of the second inning off a Dan Harper RBI double to right center field which scored Kyle Donnelly. The Ravens evened the score in the bottom half of the inning and held it tied at 1-1 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Ravens then scattered six runs throughout the next three innings and held the Chargers hitless to take a 7-1 lead going into the seventh inning. New Haven's first batter in the eighth inning, Kyle Pettoruto, got on base with a single to shortstop, but the Ravens managed to retire the next three batters and strand him on third base.
The Ravens once again held the Chargers hitless in the ninth inning and sealed the victory.
The Chargers managed four hits, one from Ryan Brockett, Evan Okon, Harper and Pettoruto. The Ravens tallied 10 hits and two errors. On the mound, Kyle Bombace suffered the loss for the Chargers, his second of the season. He pitched five innings, struck out four and allowed just four earned runs.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow afternoon, April 23 when they travel to Bentley University for a rescheduled game from Tuesday. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
