(04-19-08) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated Molloy College 19-8 Sunday afternoon at Kayo Field. It was Senior Day for the Chargers five graduating seniors. New Haven improves to 12-3 on the season, while Molloy drops to 6-7.
The Chargers scored the game's first five goals in the first 12 minutes of the half. The Lions then scored two of the next three goals cut the UNH lead to 6-2. Three unanswered goals by the Chargers improve their lead to 9-2 before the Lions scored their third in the 19th minute. Over the next five minutes the Chargers opened a 13-3 lead, partially in part to a pair of goals by freshman Alexis Gabbe. Molloy brought the score back within nine with just over thirty second left in the half.
Ashley Ferrandiz scored two goals to open the second half and give the Chargers a 15-4 lead. A free position goal in the 40th minute by Molloy brought them back within 10 points. The Chargers added two more goals before the Lions scored three unanswered goals between the 21st and 24th minutes to bring the score to 17-8. Brigid Brady and Brianna Kenworthy each scored a goal in the final six minutes to give the Chargers a 19-8 victory.
Ashley Ferrandiz and Brady each finished with five goals to lead the Chargers. Ferrandiz also added an assist for seven points on the day. Kenworthy finished the game with three goals and one assist, while Gabbe finished with three goals. Mallory Ferrandiz netted two goals and handed out two assists. Sarah Magnone scored the Chargers last remaining goal.
Maureen Spellman stopped nine shots and faced 24 shots for the Chargers between the pipes.
No. 10 New Haven returns to action on Tuesday afternoon when they host Southern Connecticut State University in their final regular season home game. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
