Baseball Holds on in 7-5 Win at Southern New Hampshire

(04-19-09) MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven baseball team defeated Southern New Hampshire University 7-5 Sunday afternoon at Penmen Field. With the win the Chargers improve to 16-14 overall and 12-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Penmen fall to 12-21-1 overall and 9-13-1 in the NE-10.

The Chargers took the lead early as they put together a three run 2nd inning highlighted by a two-RBI single by Tom Rombilus that plated Kyle Donnelly and Kyle Pettoruto. The Penmen closed the gap in the bottom of the inning as they scored one run to make it a 3-1 ballgame.

In the 3rd inning, New Haven used a pair of two-out hits to push across another run when Donnelly singled to center, bringing home Cory Carr. Southern New Hampshire matched the Chargers in their half of the inning and made the score 4-2 after three innings.

New Haven scored once in the 6th and added two more in the 8th inning as Ryan Brockett hit a two-RBI single to put the team ahead 7-2.

In the bottom of the 8th, the Penmen scored three runs, but Kyle Bombace came in relief to stop the damage. The Chargers led 7-5 in the 9th inning when Mitch Rossi entered the game and worked a scoreless inning to pick up his fifth save of the season.

T.J. Phalen picked up the win for the Chargers to improve to 3-4 on the season. He had five strikeouts and allowed just one walk over 7.0 innings in the victory.

Donnelly led the team at the plate, finishing 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base. Rombilus went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, one run scored and a stolen base. As a team, the Chargers finished with 13 hits compared to eight for the Penmen.

The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, April 22 when they take on Franklin Pierce at 3:30 p.m.
