(04-18-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team, nationally ranked No. 10, defeated the St. Michael's College Purple Knights 16-3 Saturday afternoon at Kayo Field. The win moves the Chargers to 11-3 overall and 7-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Purple Knights fall to 3-9 overall and 3-5 in the NE-10.
The Chargers wasted no time Saturday as Mallory Ferrandiz scored the Chargers opening goal just 25-seconds into the game. UNH senior Brigid Brady scored the Chargers second goal in the third minute. The score marked her 200th career goal and her 33rd of the season.
Brady, Mallory Ferrandiz and Brianna Kenworthy each added a goal before the 10-minute mark to give the Chargers a 5-0 lead. New Haven added five more before the half and continued to shut down the Purple Knights' attack.
In the opening 11 minutes of the second half, two Kenworthy scores were split by the Purple Knights first goal to bring the score to 12-1. New Haven sealed the victory by scoring four of the final six points.
Mallory Ferrandiz scored three goals and dished out two assists for five points in the Chargers' win. Kenworthy and Brady each added three goals for the Chargers, while Kenworthy grabbed a team-high three ground balls. Ashley Ferrandiz scored two and handed out two assists as well.
In the net for the Chargers, freshman Maureen Spellman stopped five shots and helped the Chargers complete 16-of-18 clears successfully.
The Chargers host Molloy College on Sunday, April 19 for Senior Day at Kayo Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
