(04-15-09) WALTHAM, Mass. - The University of New Haven softball team split a doubleheader at Bentley University on Wednesday afternoon. New Haven took game one 4-2, but fell in the second 2-0. The Chargers move to 20-12 overall and 12-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Falcons now stand at 16-12 overall and 9-7 in the NE-10.
Game One
Breanne Gleason hit a two-run homerun in the Chargers third at bat to put UNH up early in game one. The Falcons answered in the bottom of the first inning with two runs of their own, bringing the score to 2-2.
Over the next three innings, New Haven stranded five runners on base, but could not manage a run and held the Falcons scoreless. The Chargers took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning off an Amber Tolifero run.
Meghan Walter drove in a cushion run in the top of the seventh off a sacrifice fly to center field. Chelsea Harold scored the Chargers final run. Gleason struck out three in the seventh inning and earned her 19th win of the season. She added 10 strikeouts to her new UNH record, threw just one walk and gave up one earned run.
Gleason led the Chargers with her two RBI and run scored. Walter drove in one, while Nicole Downs, Harold and Tolifero each scored runs for the Chargers.
Game Two
The Chargers were held to two hits and managed only four base runners in the nightcap Wednesday. The Falcons scored one run in the bottom of the second inning and added their second score in the fifth inning.
In the Chargers half of the third inning they left two runners on base, including one on third base. They also left a runner on base in the fourth and sixth innings.
Downs and Garland registered the Chargers two hits in game two. Gleason struck out another six batters and allowed only three hits.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow, April 16 when they travel to UMass-Lowell for another NE-10 Conference doubleheader. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
