Phelan Leads Chargers Past St. Anselm

(04-14-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Junior T.J. Phelan pitched a complete game one-hitter as the University of New Haven baseball team defeated visiting St. Anselm College, 6-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. The Charger even their record at 13-13 overall and 9-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Hawks fall to 12-17 overall and 8-6 in the conference.

The Chargers got on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning when Jimmy Rivas knocked in Tom Rombilus from third base to put the team up 1-0.

In the 2nd, New Haven added four more runs, the first of which came on Kyle Pettoruto's sacrifice fly which scored Kyle Donnelly from third base. Kyle Bombace came to the plate next and doubled over the head of the left fielder to score Dan Harper from first base. A wild pitch brought in the third run of the inning, and Evan Okon's RBI single to right field made the score 5-0 after two innings.

The Chargers tacked on one more in the bottom of the 6th inning as Rombilus singled to left center, scoring Pettoruto from second base.

Phelan struck out nine Hawks and allowed just one hit, coming in the first inning of the game.

Three Chargers had a pair of hits as Rombilus went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, Harper went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Okon went 2-for-4 with one RBI. With the two-hit performance, Okon is within one hit of tying the record for career hits at UNH.

New Haven returns to action on Thursday, April 16 when they travel to St. Anselm for a 3:30 p.m. game.
