Baseball Falls 5-2 in Third Match Up With Setters

(04-13-09) PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The University of New Haven baseball team fell 5-2 Monday afternoon at Pace University in the teams' third straight contest against each other. The Chargers drop to 12-13 overall and 8-9 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Setters improve to 14-20 overall and 8-10 in the NE-10.

Pace held the Chargers hitless through three innings and scored three in the bottom of the second inning as they entered the fourth with a 3-0 lead. In the Chargers half of the fourth inning Evan Okon walked and advanced to second on a passed ball to put the Chargers first runner in scoring position. Jimmy Rivas then stepped to the plate and hit a single up the middle to drive in Okon and bring the Chargers within two.

The Setters would add one run in the bottom of the fifth before the Chargers scored their final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning. Kyle Pettoruto got on base with one out off a fielding error by the Setters. Kyle Donnelly then hit a double to left center which drove in Pettoruto and closed the gap to 4-2. Donnelly was stranded on base when the inning came to a close as the Chargers did not manage another run. The Chargers also left two more runners on base in the top of the eighth inning. The Setters scored their fifth run in the bottom of the eighth off two hits.

The Chargers tallied seven hits and two errors, while the Setters registered seven hits and three errors. New Haven left six runners on base and Pace left 10 runners on base.

Rivas led the Chargers with two hits and one RBI. Okon added two hits and a run scored, while Donnelly grabbed a hit and RBI.

Vince Lehman suffered his second loss of the season for the Chargers and pitched six full innings. He allowed three earned runs and faced 29 batters.

New Haven returns to action tomorrow, April 14 when they host St. Anselm College. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Vieira Field.
