(4-11-09) LOWELL, Mass. - The University of New Haven men's and women's track and field teams competed in the George Davis Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell. The Chargers were led by first place performances from Shannon Gagne in the women's long jump and the men's 4x100-meter relay team.
Team scores were not kept at the meet.
Gagne captured the long jump title with a leap of 5.56 meters, more than 0.30 meters ahead of the second place finisher. She also helped the women's 4x100-meter relay team to a second place finish in a time of 50.53. Other top finishers for the women included April Daugherty third in the pole vault (2.45 meters) and Angela Colandrea fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.78)
On the men's side, the 4x100-meter relay team of Justin Smith, Kevin Downing, Tyrone Sawyer and Jelani Joslyn raced to a victory in a time of 43.85, nearly a second faster than the second place team. The Chargers also had a strong day in field events as they had four top-five finishes. Kyle Lambert was second in the pole vault (3.35 meters), Paul Brandt fourth in the hammer throw (41.98 meters), Tyler Parker fourth in the high jump (1.68 meters) and Michael Renna fifth in the shot put (12.68 meters).
New Haven returns to action on Saturday, April 18 at the Springfield College Invitational.
