(04-11-09) MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team, ranked No. 8 in the latest Under Armour/IWLCA Poll, fell 13-12 Saturday afternoon at the hands of Southern New Hampshire University. The Chargers fall to 9-3 on the season and 5-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the loss, while the Penmen improve to 9-3 overall and 6-1 in the NE-10.
In the opening minute of Saturday's game the Chargers took the lead off a Sarah Magnone goal which was assisted by Alexis Gabbe. Magnone scored again in the 13th minute to once again put the Chargers ahead by one (3-2). New Haven then scored another five unanswered goals, including a third by Magnone, over the next 10 minutes to take a commanding 8-2 lead.
The Penmen answered with two scores in the 24th minute, bringing the Chargers lead to 8-4. Magnone scored her fourth of the half fourth of the first half in the 26th minute and the Penmen added one more before halftime.
Ashley Ferrandiz improved upon the Chargers 9-5 halftime lead when she netted her second of the game in the 33rd minute. Southern New Hampshire went on to score four of the next five goals, cutting the Chargers lead to just two (11-9). Carolina Marerro scored the Chargers final goal in the 47th minute. The Penmen then gradually chipped away at the Chargers lead over the final 13 minutes of the game before gaining the 13-12 lead with just 23 seconds remaining.
Magnone led the Chargers with four goals, while Ashley Ferrandiz and Mallory Ferrandiz both tallied three points. Sarah LeGoff, Gabbe and Brianna Kenworthy each scored a goal and handed out an assist for the Chargers. Marerro registered two goals in the loss.
In the net for the Chargers, Maureen Spellman stopped eight shots and suffered her third loss of the season.
The Chargers struggled off the draw, winning just 10-of-25 draw controls. They took 21 shots and grabbed 29 ground balls.
The Chargers conclude a long road trip of top ranked teams on Wednesday, April 15 when they travel to No. 9 Stonehill College. Game time in Easton, Mass. is set for 7 p.m.
