(04-10-09) COLCHESTER, Vt. - The University of New Haven softball team defeated the St. Michael's College Purple Knights 4-0 and 4-1 Friday afternoon in a doubleheader in Vermont. The Chargers improve to 18-10 overall and 10-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10), while the Purple Knights fall to 4-18 overall and 0-12 in the conference.
Game One
In the top of the third inning the Chargers broke a 0-0 tie off a Nicole Downs RBI single. The Chargers added one in the top of the fifth and another two in the top of the sixth thanks to a two-run homer from freshman Amy Nepi.
Breanne Gleason pitched the complete game for the Chargers and allowed just two hits. She threw 16 strikeouts and faced 27 batters.
Downs went 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored, while Nepi drove in two and scored one. Samantha Minervini went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Chelsea Harold scored the Chargers final run.
Game Two
In game two, the Purple Knights took the first lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. A St. Michael's error in the third inning gave the Chargers a run which tied the score at 1-1. Courtney Garland hit a homerun to open the fifth inning for the Chargers, giving UNH the go-ahead run. Gleason then hit a two RBI single later in the fifth to give the Chargers a 4-1 advantage.
Courtney Creedon allowed just one runner to get on base in the final three innings as she earned her first win of the season.
Gleason led the Chargers with two RBI off one hit, while Garland drove in one and scored one off two hits. Carolyn Fruin, Nepi and Harold each scored a run as well.
The Chargers doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, April 11 at Merrimack College has been postponed to Monday, April 13 at 3 p.m.
