(04-09-09) ALBANY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven baseball team defeated the College of St. Rose Golden Knights 11-8 Thursday afternoon in Albany. With the win the Chargers improve to 10-12 overall and 6-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Golden Knights fall to 11-18 overall and 6-8 conference play.
The Chargers fell behind 3-0 after giving up three runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Chargers cut into the lead with two runs in the top of the third inning.
Cory Carr hit a two-out two-RBI single to left field with runners on second and third base. Kyle Pettoruto and Evan Okon each scored on the play. UNH narrowly chipped away at the Golden Knights' lead with a single run in each of the next three innings. The Charger led 5-3 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
St. Rose regained the lead, 6-5, with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Chargers scored two runs in the seventh and four in the eighth to take a commanding 11-6 lead. Mitch Rossi completed his three and 1/3 innings win with a strikeout, but not before the Golden Knights homered with a runner on base in the ninth to bring the score to 11-8.
First baseman Carr went 3-for-5 to lead the Chargers with three RBI and two runs. Kyle Bombace went 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs, while Okon added two hits and two runs.
Jimmy Rivas, Tom Rombilus and Kyle Donnelly all drove in one run as well for the Chargers. T.J. Phalen pitched five and 2/3 innings for the Chargers and threw 10 strikeouts. He allowed just three earned runs and did not walk a batter. Rossi earned the win and threw three strikeouts.
The Charger baseball team returns to action on Saturday, April 11 when they travel to Pace University for a doubleheader. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
