(04-08-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven softball team defeated Assumption College in two games of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The Chargers took game one 1-0 in nine innings and completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap. The Chargers improve to 16-10 overall (8-4 NE-10), while the Greyhounds fall to 12-16 overall (6-6 NE-10).
Game One
Breanne Gleason hit a single to left center with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to give the Chargers the 1-0 victory in game one. Gleason also pitched all nine innings for the Chargers and threw a career-high 17 strikeouts.
New Haven recorded three hits and two errors and the Greyhounds tallied two hits and one error. Assumption's only error, a ball which popped out of the third baseman's glove, came in the ninth inning to put Chelsea Harold, the Chargers winning run, on base.
Jessica Medina and Samantha Minervini were the only other Chargers to record a hit. Gleason faced 35 batters, walked four, struck out 17 and gave up no runs.
Game Two
The Chargers got right on the board in the bottom of the first inning with another Gleason RBI single. New Haven took a 4-0 lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Nicole Downs drove in a run followed by a two-RBI single to center field by Meghan Walter.
Assumption scored a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning and then the Chargers added two runs in each of the sixth and seventh innings.
Gleason again pitched the complete game and earned her 16th win of the season. She threw seven strikeouts, walked only two batters and faced 25 batters.
Walter went 2-for-3 to lead the Chargers with two RBI and a run scored. Gleason went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI as well, while Downs and Harold both had one hit and a RBI.
The Chargers return to action on Friday, April 10 when they travel to St. Michael's College for a rescheduled game from earlier in the month. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
