Chargers Drop Conference Game to St. Rose

(04-07-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team fell 6-3 Tuesday afternoon to the College of St. Rose at Frank Vieira Field. The loss drops the Chargers to 9-12 overall and 5-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10), while the Golden Knights improve to 8-17 overall and 6-7 in conference play.

The Chargers gave up the Golden Knights first run in the top of the opening inning. St. Rose added one in the top of the third before the Chargers cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third off an Evan Okon RBI single. St. Rose added one run in the top of the fifth inning and three in the top of the sixth to take a 6-1 lead into the seventh.

The Chargers answered with a run in the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh Jimmy Rivas hit a sacrifice fly which drove in Ryan Brockett and in the eighth Tom Rombulis hit a RBI double to left field which drove in Kyle Bombace.

New Haven held the Golden Knights scoreless in the top of the ninth and had the momentum going into the bottom half of the ninth. Cory Carr hit a single with one out to put the tying run on-deck for the Chargers. The Golden Knights retired the Chargers next two batters and grabbed the victory.

Brockett, Okon, Carr and Bombace each recorded two hits in the loss. Bombace added two runs and Brockett scored the Chargers third run and drove in one run. Vince Lehman suffered his first loss of the season in five complete innings. He stuck out three and gave up four runs, three earned.

The Chargers return to action on Thursday, April 9 when they travel to take on the Golden Knights in Albany, N.Y. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
