(04-07-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven softball team split a doubleheader against C.W. Post on Tuesday afternoon. The Chargers (14-10) lost the first game 2-0 but grabbed a victory in game two by the score of 2-0.
Game One
C.W. Post (17-11) jumped on the board with a run in the top of the 1st inning to go ahead 1-0. New Haven squandered an opportunity in the bottom of the inning as the team was unable to capitalize with two runners in scoring position.
In the bottom of the 5th, the Chargers left the bases loaded, and they could not capitalize again in the 6th when they had a runner on second with one out.
The Pioneers, ranked first in the latest NCAA East Regional poll, tacked on one more run in the top of the 7th on a solo home run to increase their lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the inning, New Haven put two runners on base with one out, but a pair of ground outs sealed the game one victory for C.W. Post.
The Chargers managed three hits as a team and left seven runners on base. Breanne Gleason went 7.0 innings, striking out six and allowing just one walk.
Game Two
Gleason helped her own cause in game two as she hit a solo home run to deep left-center field in the second inning, giving the Chargers a 1-0 lead.
In the 6th inning, Nicole Downs singled to left field to start the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Meghan Walter. Pinch runner Katie Bannon entered the game for Downs and came around to score as Jessica Medina singled to center field, giving New Haven a 2-0 lead.
That was all Gleason (14-10) would need as she shut down the Pioneers offense, allowing three hits while striking out four in the complete game victory.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, April 8 when they play a doubleheader against Assumption starting at 3:00 p.m.
