(04-04-09) NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team split a doubleheader at Southern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon. The Chargers won the opening game by a score of 5-1, while the Owls took the nightcap 10-4. The Chargers move to 9-11 overall (5-7 Northeast-10 Conference) and the Owls move to 9-12 overall (4-3 NE-10).
Game One
Chris Smith pitched six complete innings, allowing just one run and three hits to lead the Chargers to the victory. UNH scored four in the second inning, including three off a Kyle Donnelly triple which drove in three runs. Donnelly scored the fourth UNH run off a Jordan Kershaw single on the next at-bat.
The Owls scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning, while the Chargers added an insurance unearned run in the top of the eighth inning.
Donnelly went 2-for-3 with the three RBI and run, while Jimmy Rivas and Evan Okon each added two runs. Smith struck out seven batters and earned the win for UNH.
Game Two
Southern led off the nightcap with a run in the first inning. The Chargers answered with two in the second, but the Owls regained the lead with two in the bottom of the inning. New Haven scored two runs in the top of the sixth and took their 4-3 lead into the bottom half of the seventh inning. The Owls then caught fire with five runs in the seventh and two in the eighth as they secured the victory.
Donnelly went a perfect 3-for-3 in game two and scored two runs. Dan Harper went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored, while Kyle Bombace and Evan Okon each tallied two hits.
The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, April 7 when they host the College of St. Rose. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at Frank Vieira Field.
