(04-03-09) GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The nationally ranked No. 7 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team dropped their first contest of the season 18-6 to No. 1 Adelphi University Friday night. The Chargers fall to 9-1 overall, while the Panthers stay perfect at 9-0.
After fall down 2-0 after one and a half minutes, the Chargers answered with a Sarah Magnone goal. The Panthers added two before the Chargers scored their second to cut the Adelphi lead to 4-2. Adelphi then went on a 7-2 run to close the first half and take an 11-4 lead at the break.
Magnone scored the first of the second half as well to bring the Chargers within six. The Panthers put the lead out of reach with six unanswered goals and stellar defense over the next 20 minutes. Carolina Marrero netted the Chargers final goal with just less than five minutes remaining. Adelphi added one in the final minute and kept their undefeated record (13-0) against the Chargers alive.
Marrero and Magnone each scored two, while Ashley Ferrandiz scored one and dished out one assist. Mallory Ferrandiz also scored two points with two assists. Alexis Gabbe and Aubrey Duncan each tallied one point. Goalkeeper Maureen Spellman suffered her first loss of the season and registered six saves.
The Chargers trailed 44-16 in shots and 22-12 in ground balls, but split 26 draw controls with the Panthers (13-13).
New Haven is on the road again on Wednesday, April 8 when they travel to No. 2 C.W. Post. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
