(04-02-09) MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven women's softball team lost a two one-run games on Thursday afternoon to Southern New Hampshire University at Penmen Field. The Chargers (11-9, 4-4 Northeast-10 Conference) fell 1-0 in game one before dropping game two by the score of 2-1.
Game One
The Chargers hurt themselves early as they recorded two errors in the bottom of the 1st inning which led to an unearned run by the Penmen. Southern New Hampshire led off the inning with a single to left field, and after pitcher Breanna Gleason induced a fly out to center field, New Haven committed errors on back-to-back plays which allowed the runner to score.
The Penmen run in the first proved to be the difference as New Haven never got its bats going and had a runner reach second base just one time.
Gleason took the tough-luck loss despite giving up just one hit in the game. She struck out five Penmen and did not allow a walk. On offense, the Chargers totaled three hits, two of which came from first baseman Meghan Walter.
Game Two
New Haven struck first in game two as Chelsea Harold singled to lead off the 3rd inning. After she stole second base, Nicole Downs singled to right field and Harold advanced to third. Following a pop out, the Chargers got on the board as Jessica Medina laid down a bunt that scored Harold from third to give them a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the 4th inning, Southern New Hampshire evened the score on a solo home run and took the lead the next inning off of a two-out RBI double to right field.
The Chargers got a single from Samantha Minervini to lead off the 6th, but they were unable to advance the runner any further.
Gleason (11-9) again took the loss after relieving starter Courtney Creedon. Downs and Harold paced the offense with two hits apiece.
New Haven returns to action on Saturday, April 4 when they travel to St. Michael's College for a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
