(04-02-09) SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The University of New Haven baseball team lost 5-3 in their second match up of the week to American International College. The Chargers fall to 8-10 overall and 4-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 4-16 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
The Chargers allowed one run in the bottom of the first inning, but took a 3-1 lead through two and a half innings. UNH put all three of their runs on the board in the third inning. Tom Rombilus started the UNH rally with a one-out single to right field. Evan Okon drove Rombilus home with a two-out double two batters later. The Chargers next batter, Jimmy Rivas drove in the Chargers final two runs with a two-out homerun over the left center fence.
The Chargers did not lead for long as the Yellow Jackets drove in four runs off five hits in the bottom of the third inning. With two hits and three runners left on base, UNH narrowly took over the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. A walk in each of the final two innings also left one on base for UNH in the eighth and ninth innings.
T.J. Phalen suffered the loss in seven and 2/3 innings pitched for the Chargers. He faced 35 batters and threw six strikeouts.
Rivas went 1-for-4 with the two RBI homerun, while Okon also went 1-for-4 with one RBI.
The Chargers return to action on Saturday, April 4 when they travel to Southern Connecticut. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
