(04-01-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven softball team dropped a pair of games Wednesday afternoon to the No. 25 Le Moyne College Dolphins. The Chargers fell 4-0 in the opening game and 2-1 in the nightcap. UNH falls to 11-7 (4-2 NE-10) on the season, while the Dolphins improve to 16-6 (4-0 NE-10).
Game One
UNH struggled to get on the board in the opening game and stranded five runners on base, including two in the first inning. The Dolphins got on the board first in the top of the second inning with a single run. They added one in the top of the fourth and two in the fifth to take the 4-0 win.
Nicole Downs tallied two hits to lead the Chargers. Jessica Medina and Samantha Minervini also recorded hits in the loss. Breanne Gleason pitched the complete game for the Chargers and threw nine strikeouts, while giving up three earned runs. The Dolphins pitchers combined for ten strikeouts and held the UNH bats to just four hits.
Game Two
With a run in the top of the first inning, Le Moyne scored first in the second game as well. A solo homerun from Medina in the bottom of the fourth inning tied the score at 1-1. The Dolphins knocked in the game-winner and left three runners on base in the top of the sixth inning off two hits. The Charger best chance to tie the score came off an Amy Nepi single in the Chargers half of the sixth. The Chargers also left a runner on third in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Chargers were held to four hits in game two and held the Dolphins to five hits. The Chargers, however, recorded three errors, while the Dolphins played errorless.
In the second game, Chelsea Harold recorded two hits, while Medina and Nepi registered the other two. Gleason suffered the loss for the Chargers, but gave up only one earned run. She threw three strikeouts and faced 31 batters.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow, April 2 when they travel to Southern New Hampshire. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
