(03-26-09) WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of New Haven baseball team defeated Assumption College 10-6 Thursday afternoon in Worcester. With the win the Chargers improve to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10), while the Greyhounds fall to 10-9 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

The Chargers opened strong with three runs to lead off the game. Tom Rombilus led off with a single to left center and moved into scoring position on an error. Kyle Bombace was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. Evan Okon then drove in Romilus and moved Bombace to third base with a single to center field. Jimmy Rivas stepped to the plate and drove in Bombace with a double to right center. Okon scored the Chargers final run in the opening inning on a Cory Carr ground out.

The Greyhounds added two runs in the bottom half of the inning before the Chargers took a 4-2 lead in the top of the second inning. Bombace drove in Kyle Donnelly off a sacrifice fly to left field.

Each team added a run in the fourth inning and the Chargers all but sealed the victory with a five-run sixth inning. The Chargers scored five runs off five hits in the inning, including a two RBI single to center field by Carr. Assumption scored two in the bottom of the sixth and one in the bottom of the seventh to cut the Charger lead to 10-6. Bombace finished off the game on the mound for the Chargers in three complete innings. He threw one strikeout and allowed only one earned run.

T.J. Phalen pitched five innings for the Chargers and earned his first win of the season. The junior threw five strikeouts and faced 29 batters.

Rivas led the Chargers with three hits, two RBI and one run, while Carr tallied two hits and three RBI. Okon added two RBI and one run. Rombilus went 3-for-3 at the plate for UNH, scored two runs and drove in one.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday, March 28 when they host Stonehill College in a doubleheader. Opening pitch at Vieira Field is scheduled for 12 p.m. (noon).
