No. 7 Women's Lacrosse Downs St. Thomas Aquinas in Non-Conference Contest

(03-26-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team, ranked No. 7 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association poll, defeated St. Thomas Aquinas College 18-4 Thursday afternoon at Kayo Field. The Chargers improve to 7-0 on the season and the Spartans drop to 0-2 overall.

Senior Brianna Kenworthy scored a career-high eight points as she connected on each of her five shots for five goals and three assists. Her teammate Ashley Ferrandiz also tallied a eight points on four goals and four assists.

The Chargers wasted no time getting on the board as Kenworthy scored 21 seconds into the game off an assist from Mallory Ferrandiz. New Haven pushed its lead to 3-0 on goals from freshman Sarah Magnone and Ashley Ferrandiz. Following a free-position goal by the Spartans, the Chargers went on an 11-0 run to go ahead 14-1 with three and a half minutes remaining in the first half. Kenworthy scored three times and Ashley Ferrandiz dished out three of her game-high four assists during the stretch.

St. Thomas Aquinas opened the second half with a score before the Chargers pushed its lead to 18-3 on four consecutive goals. The Spartans connected on their second free-position shot of the game with just less than eight minutes remaining in the game.

The Chargers were a perfect 13-for-13 in clear attempts and won 19-of-24 draw controls. New Haven finished 3-for-3 on free-position shots and held a 21-19 advantage in caused turnovers.

Magnone scored three times for the Chargers, while both Mallory Ferrandiz and Alexis Gabbe finished with one goal and two assists. Nine different players scored for New Haven.

Maureen Spellman earned her seventh win of the season between the pipes, finishing with three saves and two goals allowed after playing the opening 30 minutes.

New Haven returns to action on Saturday, March 28 when they travel to St. Anselm for a Northeast-10 Conference match-up. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
