(03-25-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team defeated the C.W. Post Pioneers 4-1 Wednesday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. With the win the Chargers improve to 5-7 on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 5-16 overall.

The first five innings of Wednesday's game were scoreless for both teams. Alex Smith, New Haven's starting pitcher, threw all five innings and held the Pioneers hitless through five. New Haven had runners on third base two different times in the first five innings. All the game's scoring occurred in the sixth inning, including the Pioneers only run in the top of the inning.

The Chargers answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ryan Brockett started the Chargers rally with a one-out single to left field. Tom Rombilus then laid down a sac-bunt which the pitcher threw over the firstbaseman's head, giving him second and Brockett a chance to score. Although Brockett was thrown out at home, Rombilus advanced to second and Kyle Bombace walked, putting runners on first and second with two outs.

Evan Okon then stepped to the plate and knocked a single to center field which scored Rombilus. Jimmy Rivas hit next and drove in Bombace and Okon with a double to deep right field. Rivas scored the Chargers fourth run off a Cory Carr single to right center in UNH's next at-bat.

Eric Peck and Mitch Rossi pitched the final three scoreless innings to lead the Chargers to their second-straight win.

Okon led the Chargers with two hits, one run and one RBI, while Carr also had one RBI on one hit. Rivas went 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored.

Peck earns his second win in one and 1/3 innings pitched, while Smith gets a no decision. Smith pitched five and 2/3 innings, struck out three and allowed just one earned run.

The Chargers return to action tomorrow at 3 p.m. when they travel to Assumption College. The Chargers defeated Assumption 9-2 Tuesday afternoon at Vieira Field.
