(03-24-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven baseball team defeated the Assumption College Greyhounds 9-2 Tuesday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. The Chargers improve to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10), while the Greyhounds fall to 9-8 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
New Haven opened the scoring in the third inning when Cory Carr doubled over the head of the center fielder with the bases loaded to bring home Evan Okon and Tom Rombilus.
After adding a run in the fourth to extend their lead to 3-0, the Chargers tacked on four more in their half of the fifth inning as Ryan Brockett singled, scoring Carr and Jimmy Rivas. New Haven then caught a break as an Assumption error allowed two more runs to score, giving the Chargers a commanding 7-0 lead.
The Greyhounds responded in the sixth inning as they broke up Vince Lehman's no-hitter, scoring two runs and closing their deficit to five, 7-2.
In the seventh inning, New Haven added a pair of insurance runs as Brockett tripled to bring home Michael Magnussen from second base. Brockett also scored on the play as the ball squirted away from the Greyhounds third baseman.
Brockett led the team with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored. Carr finished with two hits, two RBI and one run score while Rombilus had a pair of hits, two stolen bases and two runs scored.
Lehman pitched a strong five and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out seven. Eric Peck and Kyle Befus relieved Lehman and combined to allow just one hit in three and one-third innings of work.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, March 25 when they take on C.W. Post at Frank Vieira Field. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
