(03-24-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's lacrosse team, nationally ranked No. 7 in the most recent IWLCA Weekly Poll, defeated the American International College Yellow Jackets 16-2 Tuesday afternoon at Kayo Field. The Chargers improve to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10), while the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
UNH scored the game's first 13 points. Brigid Brady opened in the third minute with an unassisted goal and Laura McLean capped the 13-0 run in the 26th minute with her third goal of the season. During the 23-minute span, Ashley Ferrandiz and Carolina Marrero each scored two goals and handed out three assists. The pair connected for two goals between the 11th and 14th minute. The Yellow Jackets scored one with 40 seconds remaining in the half to get on the board.
Ashley Ferrandiz and Marrero connected one more time in the 38th minute to give the Chargers a 14-1 lead. AIC added its second in the 47th minute before the Chargers scored two to cap their sixth-straight win.
The Chargers were successful on 12-of-15 clear attempts and held a 16-4 advantage in draw controls. Maureen Spellman and Shannon Greenwood each played a half in goal for the Chargers and combined for six saves.
Ashley Ferrandiz totaled four goals and three assists in the win, while Marrero scored two and handed out four. Brianna Kenworthy and Brady each scored two goals, and Kenworthy added one assist. Mallory Ferrandiz scored once and dished out three assists. Five other players scored one goal for the Chargers: Kristine Lambracht, Sarah Magnone, Aubrey Duncan, Missy Carney and McLean.
Mallory Ferrandiz led the team with six ground balls and added three draw controls and four caused turnovers.
The Chargers return to action on Thursday, March 26 when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at Kayo Field. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
