Chargers Drop Two More to River Hawks and Conclude Week in Florida

(03-21-09) BOCA RATON, Fla. - The University of New Haven baseball team dropped two games to UMass-Lowell Saturday afternoon in Boca Raton, Fla. The Chargers fell 4-3 in the opening game and dropped the nightcap 9-5 at the Santaluces Sports Complex. New Haven falls to 3-7 on the season and 0-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the River Hawks improve to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in the NE-10.

Game One
The Chargers scored one run in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. The River Hawks answered with one in the bottom half of the inning and two in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead after five. New Haven cut one off the lead with a run in the sixth inning. The Chargers eventually tied the score a 3-3 in the top of the ninth inning. Two hits (a double and a single) in the bottom half of the ninth was all the River Hawks needed as they sealed the 4-3 victory.

Evan Okon led the Chargers with two hits in three at-bats with a run scored. Jordan Kershaw went 1-for-4 with a run and Kyle Bombace also went 1-for-4 with a RBI.

Game Two
The Chargers once again opened scoring in the second inning of game two. Kyle Donnelly drove in two runs with two outs in the second inning. UMass-Lowell cut the Chargers lead to 2-1 in the second half of inning two and took a 4-2 lead at the end of three innings. UNH added on in the top of the fifth to come within two (4-2), but the River Hawks added two in the bottom of the fifth, two in the seventh and on in the eighth to take a 9-3 lead going into the ninth. The Chargers rallied with two in the top of the final inning, but could not erase the six-run deficit.

Donnelly went 1-for-4 with the two RBI and Cory Carr went 1-for-3 with a run scored to lead the Chargers. Tom Rombilus added a run and a RBI.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, March 24 when they host Assumption College at Frank Vieira Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
