(03-20-09) BOCA RATON, Fla. - The University of New Haven baseball team fell 6-7 in their 2009 Northeast-10 Conference opener against UMass-Lowell Friday afternoon. With the loss UNH falls to 3-5 (0-1 NE-10), while the River Hawks improve to 8-3 (2-0 NE-10).
The River Hawks exploded with four runs in the first inning. The River Hawks opening batter hit a homerun and they followed that with three more runs in the inning. The Chargers scored their first in the bottom of the opening inning, but Lowell added one more in top of the second to take a 5-1 lead. New Haven rallied and evened the scored at 5-5 with a four-run sixth inning. The River Hawks then broke the tie and drove in their winning-run in the top of the eighth inning.
Evan Okon, Jimmy Rivas and Kyle Bombace each went 2-for-4 at the plate for UNH. Rivas drove in two runs and scored one, while Okon scored two and Bombace scored one. Cory Carr drove in two runs and Kyle Pettoruto recorded the team's final RBI.
T.J. Phalen pitched seven and 1/3 innings for the Chargers and threw six strikeouts.
The Chargers return to action tomorrow in a rescheduled doubleheader against the River Hawks. The teams will play a doubleheader at 11 a.m. at the Santaluces Sports Complex. The game was originally scheduled to be a single game with a noon starting time at Florida Atlantic.
