(03-18-09) WINTER PARK, Fla. - The nationally ranked No. 8 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated the No. 10 Rollins College Tars 23-7 Wednesday night in Florida. The Chargers improve to 4-0 on the season while the Tars fall to 4-2.
Just under four minutes into Wednesday's game, Rollins scored the game's first goal. The Chargers answered by scoring the next five goals, including three from sophomore Ashley Ferrandiz. The Chargers added five goals in the final ten minutes of the first half and held the Tars to four scores. The Chargers led 10-5 at halftime and held a 16-8 advantage in first-half shots.
New Haven took over the game in the first 20 minutes of the second half. UNH scored ten straight goals to open the second and took a commanding 20-5 lead. Six different Chargers scored during the stretch and the Chargers converted on two free position attempts. The Chargers added three goals and the Tars scored two in the final ten minutes as UNH took the 23-7 decision.
The Chargers took 35 shots and held Rollins to 17 Wednesday night. Maureen Spellman recorded seven saves and earned the win for the Chargers between the posts. UNH held a slight 45-41 edge in ground balls and controlled the draws 20-of-32 times. The Chargers were also successful on 25-of-28 clear attempts.
Ashley Ferrandiz led the Chargers with six goals and two assists. Her sister Mallory Ferrandiz netted five goals and handed out one assist. Brianna Kenworthy added four goals and Brigid Brady scored three. Sarah Magnone came in with two goals and one assist, while Carolina Marrero, Laura McLean and Alexis Gabbe each scored one.
The Chargers return to action on Saturday, March 21 against Bentley University at Kayo Field. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
