Caldwell Outlasts Chargers 10-7 at Palm Beach Challenge

(03-17-09) LANTANA, Fla. - The University of New Haven baseball team dropped a non-conference match up with Caldwell College 10-7 Tuesday afternoon at the Palm Beach Challenge in Florida. The Chargers fall to 3-4 with the loss and Caldwell improves to 3-5 with the win.

New Haven opened Tuesday's game with two runs in the top of the first inning. Jimmy Rivas drove in both runs which were scored by Tom Rombilus and Ryan Brockett. Caldwell answered in the bottom of the first inning, scoring five runs off five hits to take a 5-2 lead.

The Cougars added one in their half of the second inning and Rivas once again hit a RBI double in the third to cut the Cougars lead to 6-3. The Chargers briefly gained the lead after a four-run fourth inning, but Caldwell answered with four in the bottom of the inning to take a 10-7. Despite holding the Cougars scoreless in the final innings, the Chargers could not muster a run and managed just one hit in the last five innings.

Rivas drove in five of the Chargers seven runs off three hits in five at-bats. Kyle Bombace went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored, while Kyle Pettoruto drove in the Chargers final run. UNH's Alex Smith pitched three and 2/3 innings and recorded his first loss of the season.

The Chargers return to action tomorrow night against Palm Beach Atlantic. The opening pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Palm Beach, Fla. Click here to listen live via the Sailfish Radio Network.
