Softball Splits on 2009 Opening Day

(03-15-09) KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The University of New Haven softball team opened their 2009 schedule by splitting two games at the Rebel Spring Games in Florida on Sunday. The Chargers fell 7-0 to Adelphi University in their opener, but rebounded by defeating Minnesota State-Moorhead 5-3 in their second game of the day.

Game One

The Chargers struggled to get started in their opening game of the season against Adelphi. Breanna Gleason pitched for the Chargers, threw three strikeouts and suffered the loss. Nicole Downs led the Chargers bats with two hits.

Game Two

UNH was down 3-0 going into the fifth inning against Minnesota State-Moorhead. The Chargers rattled off five runs in the fifth and held the Dragons scoreless in the final two innings to win their first game of the season. Gleason pitched and earned the win with 10 strikeouts. Samantha Minervini started the UNH run in the fifth when she was hitch by a pitch. She scored the Chargers first run off a double by Meghan Walter. Downs then hit a single which scored Katie Bannon who was pinch running for Walter. Down 3-2, the Chargers got two more runners on base and Amy Nepi drove in one to tie the game at 3-3. Chelsea Harold then drove in the Chargers game winning and fifth run with a single.

The Chargers return to action tomorrow at the Rebel Games against Wayne State (3 p.m.) and Central Missouri (5 p.m.).
