Gagne Qualifies Eighth for 200 Meter Finals

(03-13-09) HOUSTON, Texas - University of New Haven sophomore women's track and field student-athlete Shannon Gagne advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship Finals in the 200 meter Friday evening at Yeoman Field House on the University of Houston. Chargers freshman Kevin Downing missed out on the finals, finishing his excellent indoor season in the preliminaries.

Gagne ran in the opening heat on Friday and qualified with a time of 25.00 seconds. She was the first UNH women's track athlete to qualify for Nationals and now becomes the first to qualify for the championship race. The Meriden, Conn. native ran a school and personal-best time of 24.47 earlier in the year. The 200 meter finals will take place in Houston, as part of the NCAA Division II National Championship Festival, on Saturday, March 14 at 6:15 p.m. (Eastern).

Downing ran a time of 22.29 in the 200 meter, after qualifying with a time of 21.71. He was one of only three freshmen to qualify for Nationals in the 200 meter.
