(03-13-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Sophomore Ashley Ferrandiz scored five goals and added two assists to lead the nationally ranked No. 8 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team past Merrimack College, 20-7, in its first-ever Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) game. The Chargers improve to 2-0 overall while the Warriors fall in their first game of the season.
After falling down 3-1 early in Friday's contest, the Chargers rattled off 11 unanswered goals. Ferrandiz started the Chargers streak with a free position goal at the 22:30 mark. She added two more during the Chargers 11-0 run. Mallory Ferrandiz scored a goal and concluded the Chargers outstanding 11-0 run with 5:40 left in the opening half. Each team added a goal before halftime and the Chargers led 13-4 at the break.
UNH's Sarah Magnone scored her third goal of the game just under one and a half minutes into the second half as the Chargers took a 14-4 lead. The Warriors scored their fifth goal at the 24:15 mark then UNH scored another three unanswered goals to take a decisive 17-5 lead. The Chargers scored three of the final five goals as they sealed the program's first-ever NE-10 victory.
The Chargers held a slight edge in draw controls (15-14), but trailed in ground balls (21-20). UNH was successful on 2-of-4 free position attempts, while the Warriors connected on 1-of-7 attempts.
Mallory Ferrandiz scored two goals and dished out three assists for the Chargers. The senior added five ground balls, seven caused turnovers and two draw controls. Brianna Kenworthy and Brigid Brady each recorded a hat-trick, while Kenworthy also grabbed three ground balls and five draw controls. Carolina Marrero was productive with two goals and two assists and Aubrey Duncan assisted on three scores. Lisa Barnard and Laura McLean concluded the Chargers scoring.
The Chargers head to Florida for their next two contests. They take on Franklin Pierce on Monday, March 16 in a game played at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. Game time is set for 4 p.m. The Chargers will also take on Rollins College on Wednesday, March 18 at 7 p.m.
