(03-10-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The nationally ranked No. 9 University of New Haven women's lacrosse team defeated the visiting Holy Family University Tigers 18-2 Tuesday afternoon at Kayo Field. The Chargers grab a win in their season opener and the Tigers fall to 0-2 on the season.
UNH opened scoring just one minute and 50 seconds into Tuesday's contest when Mallory Ferrandiz scored off a free position shot. Thirty seconds later the Tigers evened the score. New Haven then scored 12 unanswered goals to take an impressive 13-1 lead with 12:42 left in the half. The Tigers added their second goal of the game with 11:05 remaining in the first half. The Chargers added two before the half to take a 15-2 lead at the break.
The Chargers scored three second-half goals, while maintaining possession in the Tigers end for nearly the entire half. Sarah LeGoff scored at the 21:40 mark, Carolina Marrero scored with 19:56 remaining and Lisa Barnard scored the Chargers final goal with 10:32 remaining.
Freshman Sarah Magnone kicked off her Charger career with an impressive three goals and one assist. Alexis Gabbe (2) and Aubrey Duncan also scored their first collegiate goals in the contest.
Mallory Ferrandiz also tallied three goals for the Chargers, while Brianna Kenworthy and Brigid Brady each scored two. Ashley Ferrandiz scored one goal and handed out a game-high five assists.
The Chargers grabbed 17-of-22 draw controls and recorded only eight turnovers.
New Haven returns to action on Friday, March 13 when they host Merrimack College in their Northeast-10 Conference opener. Game time at Kayo Field is set for 3:30 p.m.
