As part of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Pink Zone™ initiative, which promotes breast cancer awareness, the University of New Haven will present checks to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund and the Hospital of Saint Raphael's Father Michael J. The UNH women's basketball team celebrated the Pink Zone™ initiative at its game vs. Franklin Pierce on Saturday, February 14. This year marked the Chargers third year hosting a "Pink" event and for the third-straight year they increased their contribution to each of the selected organizations.

Nearly 20 clubs, organizations and local businesses joined in the effort by selling Pink Zone naming ribbons, t-shirts and cookies. Additionally, UNH's fraternities and sororities helped sponsor the "Be Bold, Go Bald!" campaign where students helped raise money by shaving their heads at the game. The team wore pink shoelaces and pink warm-up shirts during the game to show their support.

The WBCA began the WBCA Pink Zone™, formerly known as "Think Pink", in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses and in communities. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success. In 2008, over 1,200 teams and organizations participated, reaching over 830,000 fans and raising over $930,000 for breast cancer awareness and research. This year more than 1,500 teams and organizations have taken part in Pink Zone™ events.

A special thanks to all of the Pink Zone sponsors!
