(02-10-09) SOUTH EASTON, Mass. - Three University of New Haven student-athletes have earned Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) All-Academic recognition for their excellence on and off the field of play. Rhe-Ann Niles and Yael Rosner of the women's volleyball team and Jason Zurita of the men's soccer have each been named to the NE-10 Fall All-Academic Team.
A senior Engineering major, Zurita earned men's soccer NE-10 All-Academic recognition. Zurita started 13 games and played in 16 this past fall. He tallied one goal off 18 shots at midfield for the Chargers. A native of Bethpage, N.Y., Zurita boasts a 3.85 cumulative grade point average.
Also named the NE-10 Player of the Year and an Academic All-American, Niles led the Chargers with a .467 hitting percentage and was second on the team with 3.31 kills per set. She finished second in all of NCAA Division II in hitting percentage and added 1.21 blocks per set. Niles, a graduate student, finished with a 3.80 undergrad GPA and currently has a 4.00 graduate GPA.
A senior Psychology major, Rosner was also named an Academic All-American, while earning NE-10 Setter of the Year honors. Rosner led the NE-10 this season with 10.26 assists per set. She finished her two-year career at UNH with 2,492 total assists, ranking her fifth all time.
To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: 1) participated in at least half of the team's competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and 3) completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution. The Northeast-10 All-Academic Teams are chosen by a vote of the Northeast-10 Sports Information Directors.
