(02-07-09) NEW HAVEN, Conn. - University of New Haven men's and women's track competed at the Giegengack Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Freshman Kevin Downing won the 200 meter for the Chargers third straight meet, while Shannon Gagne broke her previous UNH record in the 200 meter and finished in second place.
With a time of 21.86 seconds, Downing was the only runner to break the 22-second mark in the 200 meter dash. Robert Creighton finished in the top ten in the men's weight throw, with a personal best distance of 13.08 meters. Tyrone Sawyer was also impressive in the men's sprints. The senior finished seventh in the 200 meter with a time of 22.64 seconds and won the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.85 seconds. Mark Kichar finished 18th in the 500m with a personal best time of 1:07.95 and Joshua Woodin threw a personal best in the event with a throw of 12.86m.
Gagne broke a record she set earlier this season with a time of 25.01 seconds in the 200 meter. She also finished second in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.45 meters, coming close to her previous UNH record of 5.52 meters. Alesha Chu Foo led the UNH women in the high jump with a height of 1.55 meters. Lauren DiMitruck ran a personal best in the mile with a time of 5:22.47. The women's Distance Medley Relay team of Ashley Hardy, Alesha Chu Foo, Danielle Howell and Lauren DiMitruck ran a new school record time of 13:10.87.
The Chargers return to action at the Lafayette/Rider Invitational on Friday, February 13 which will take place at the New York City Armory.
