(02-03-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven will celebrate the 23rd Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) by offering free clinics in a variety of locations in the next two weeks. In previous years UNH has hosted NGWSD clinics at Charger Gymnasium, but in an effort to broaden their community engagement efforts, the Chargers have decided to take their NGWSD clinics on the road.
The Chargers eight women's sports teams will participate in three NGWSD Outreach Sports Clinics, starting today, February 3 at the Boys & Girls Club of New Haven. The teams will also travel to the New Haven YMCA on Thursday, February 5 and conclude their Outreach Sports Clinics at Savin Rock Community School and Forest School next week. At each of the outreach clinics, UNH student-athletes and coaches will teach skills in a variety of sports including basketball, soccer and volleyball. They will also be handing out free tickets to the Chargers NGWSD basketball doubleheader on Saturday, February 14 at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers men's and women's basketball teams host Franklin Pierce starting at 2 p.m. that Saturday.
"This year's National Girls and Women in Sports Day Outreach Sports Clinics are an excellent opportunity for our student-athletes to be a part of the greater New Haven community," said UNH's Associate Director of Athletics Susan Zawacki. "National Girls and Women in Sports Day clinics continue to be a great tradition and community engagement opportunity at UNH," she added.
The NGWSD initiative is part of the UNH Department of Athletics broader community engagement efforts, which seeks to help the surrounding towns and community organizations while providing opportunities for student-athletes and coaches to give back to their communities.
