Charger Student-Athletes Show Commitment to Community

Article Body

(11-13-08) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven student-athletes have spent the past few days raking leaves at houses located around Charger Gymnasium. This annual project was started three years ago when student's felt it would be a great way to engage the local community in Charger athletics. This provides an opportunity for student-athletes to build relationships with families in West Haven while also showing a commitment to community service.

So far this fall, the men's soccer, women's soccer, men's volleyball, softball, baseball and football teams have been involved with raking leaves. Sophomore forward, Holly Dawson, of the women's soccer team stated, "It is great to help the neighbors that we see on a daily basis while walking to and from practice. This fall I saw many of our neighbors at our games, which makes doing a project like this even easier."

The University of New Haven athletic department prides itself on being actively involved in the local community and so far this year has accumulated over 500 hours towards the department goal of 2500 for the 2008-09 academic year.
