II Softball Northeast Regional Page & Bracket LiveStats (for all games) Live Audio (opens pop-up window)BROOKVILLE, N.Y. -- Breanne Gleason pitched her second straight complete game, striking out nine while allowing just an unearned run, to help the eighth-seeded University of New Haven defeat sixth-seeded Bryant University in the 2008 NCAA Division II Softball Championships Northeast Regional on Saturday morning at C.W. Post.
With the victory, UNH (27-20) advances to play at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday in the bottom half of the bracket, where they will face the winner of (4) Caldwell vs. (3) Adelphi.
UNH is assured of being one of the final four teams playing at the Northeast Regional, while (6) Bryant (30-16) is eliminated with the loss.
Gleason allowed five hits and two walks in seven innings while striking out nine. She allowed just one unearned run with two outs in the top of the first inning, then held the Bulldogs scoreless through the next 6 1/3 innings.
Nicole Downs had a solo home run for the Chargers to break a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the third, and UNH added three insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. UNH tied the game at 1-1 in the second with an RBI single to shortstop by Chelsea Harold, scoring Meg Brown.
In the fifth, Gleason singled and Jessica Medina reached on an error at second base to start the three-run rally. Jordanna Borska drove in a run with a groundout to short stop, and Brown doubled home the final run of the day.
Bryant had defeated Adelphi, 4-0, on the first day of competition at the Regional before falling to (2) Le Moyne, 9-1 on Thursday.
