CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. -- University of New Haven lacrosse coach Jen Fallon earned Coach of the year honors and four Chargers earned spots on the All-East Coast Conference teams in voting by the league's head coaches, it was announced on Friday. Brigid Brady earned First Team honors while Mallory Ferrandiz, Ashley Ferrandiz and Ashley Griffin each were recognized on the Second Team.
Fallon (photo) earns her first ECC Coach of the Year award in only her second year in charge of the program. She guided the Chargers to a 14-3 record this season, including a 3-3 mark in conference play. In her two seasons as head coach, Fallon has led UNH to a 21-13 overall record. Their 14 wins this season were twice the program's previous high of seven set in both 2005 and 2007.
The Chargers also cracked the top ten of the IWLCA National Rankings for the first time ever this season under Fallon and finished at No. 9 in the final rankings. UNH also finished ranked third in the North Region behind conference opponents C.W. Post and Adelphi.
Junior Brady was a First Team All-ECC pick at the attacking position for UNH. It is the first time she has been named First Team All-ECC. As a sophomore, Brady earned Second Team honors. The Islip Terrace, N.Y. native registered a team-high 53 goals on the season. She also added seven assists for a total of 60 points in 17 matches. Brady also had 21 groundballs, 35 draw controls and led the team with 21-of-33 eight-meter goals converted. After three seasons at UNH, Brady holds school records for most career points (189) and goals (167).
Headlining UNH's Second Team selections was midfielder Mallory Ferrandiz. The junior from West Sayville, N.Y. bounced back from a season-ending injury in 2007 to record 55 points including a team-high 19 assists. She also scored 36 goals in her third season with the Chargers. Ferrandiz registered a team leading 50 draw controls on the year which ranked 11th nationally. The award is the second All-ECC selection for Ferrandiz. She was named First Team All-ECC as a freshman in 2006.
Freshman Ashley Ferrandiz was also named to the All-ECC Second Team as a midfielder. Ferrandiz was certainly an impact player for the Chargers in her first season at UNH, starting all 17 matches. She tallied a team high 64 points on 48 goals and 16 assists. She led the team in groundballs with 51 and was second in draw controls with 46. Ferrandiz tallied five game-winning goals for the Chargers in 2008.
Also named to the All-ECC Second Team was defender Ashley Griffin. The junior from Waterboro, Maine led the Charger defense that allowed only 10.53 goals per game. Their goals against average ranked 18th nationally and 4th in the East Coast Conference. Griffin also recorded 16 groundballs and 6 caused turnovers on the season.
