WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- Starter Riley Shuckerow allowed just an unearned run in eight innings of work to lead the University of Bridgeport past University of New Haven, 4-1, in East Coast Conference baseball action at Frank Vieira Field on Thursday afternoon. The teams played this game with UB serving as the home team, after the originally-scheduled contest from Tuesday was rained out.
Bridgeport (16-15, 13-11 ECC) used a three-run fifth inning to break open a tie game, benefitting from a throwing error at the plate by UNH (19-23, 14-10 ECC) in the frame.
Matt Barile finished 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Purple Knights, while Andres Albaladejo, Peter Barrows and Mike Buswell each drove in a run as well.
Jimmy Rivas drove in his team-leading 24th run of the season for UNH, which saw both Tom Rombilus and Evan Okon finish 2-for-5 in the game as the only Chargers with multiple hits.
Shuckerow improved to 3-4 this season with his performance on the mound, allowing seven hits while walking four and striking out four. Paul Ruiz-Rodriguez saved his second game of the season with a perfect inning of relief in the ninth.
UNH took a 1-0 lead after their first turn at bat, when Okon reached on a throwing error at second base and Rivas doubled to left center.
But Bridgeport tied the contest in the bottom of the fourth after Seth Desautel led off with a single to right field. He stole second base and moved to third on a single by Barile, scoring on Albaladejo's groundout to shortstop.
The three-run fifth inning was the key for UB. Nate Leva walked to lead off, and he moved to second on a single by Gaetano Giunta. They both advanced on a passed ball, and Leva scored after a grounder to first base resulted in a throwing error to the plate by UNH first baseman Cesar Garrido. Two more runs scored after Barrows and Barile singled consecutively into left field.
UNH left 11 men on base in the game, including two in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings as Bridgeport completed a sweep of the three-game season series.
Next up for the Chargers is a weekend series with Queens College (N.Y.), beginning with a doubleheader at noon on Saturday at Vieira Field.
