BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- The University of Bridgeport baseball team sent 10 batters to plate and scored six runs in the first inning on the way to a 14-6 home East Coast Conference victory over University of New Haven at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard, Wednesday afternoon.
Bridgeport (13-14, 11-9 ECC) got 17 hits, including a 5-for-6 effort by Seth Desautel. Brett Thornton went 3-for-5 with 3 RBI, and Gaetano Giunta and Matt Barile each had two hits.
New Haven has lost three in a row and four of the last five, and now stands at 17-20 overall and 12-8 in the ECC. Starter Mike Aquilino (4-2) took the loss, retiring only one UB batter while giving up six earned runs.
Kyle Donnelly (photo) drove in three runs with a third inning triple for UNH, and Cesar Garrido had two RBI. Jimmy Rivas knocked in the other run for the Chargers.
Paul Ruiz-Rodriguez picked up the win for the Purple Knights, pitching 5 2/3 innings while allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits. Matt Kotuby finished the game for UB to record his first save of the season with 3 1/3 scoreless innings.
With the loss, UNH falls to a game back of Molloy College (13-7) for first place in the ECC standings. The Chargers are now a half-game back of second-place C.W. Post (12-7), who UNH will face in a three-game series beginning this Friday on Long Island. UNH hosts a crucial doubleheader with the Pioneers on Saturday at Frank Vieira Field beginning at noon.
